When it comes to spending on classroom technology, the Florida Senate has led the charge in recent years. Senate Education Committee chairman John Legg has held symposiums and school tours, aimed at drumming up support for more money for digital instruction.
The effort landed $40 million last year.
But when the Senate’s education budget proposal debuted this week, it notably included no money for the initiative. By contrast, the House budget included $80 million, the same amount that Gov. Rick Scott called for during his reelection campaign.
So what’s going on?
The Florida School Boards Association noticed. “The Senate has also not indicated an allocation for Digital Classrooms at this time because the Senate has indicated that it wishes to gather more information from DOE before committing to an allocation amount,” the organization’s lobbyist wrote in a daily update to members.
