After much Senate posturing, the Best & Brightest, sporting recently passed House language, is now stuffed into SB 524 by Sen. Gaetz in a “train.” It is in this form that the $44M teacher bonus program once called “stupid” by Sen. Detert will be heard in Thursday’s Senate Appropriations Committee.
Take action today & say no thanks to the Best & Brightest
Best & Brightest endured a rocky first year that underscored the known bias that favors new teachers over veterans. Many teachers found that their 80% or higher percentile rankings were hard to locate while other “highly effective” teachers never took the SAT. All of this strikes at the ridiculous core of this bill – the unscientific premise that a test taken by a seventeen-year-old predicts adult performance for years to come.
Make sure the Senate hears your voice today.
Rep. Erik Fresen’s brainchild is based on zero empirical evidence. It’s disrespectful that the Senate is even thinking about codifying into law an annual $44M “bonus” program that rewards professional educators for teenage SAT scores when Florida teachers are some of the lowest paid in the nation.
The Best & Brightest is neither best nor bright.
